In this blog I am going to talk about 3 themes (Purple Haze, Earthly Delights and Expressionism) that our teacher showed us during the class time. I need to choose one theme out of 3 themes for my final portfolio. So I need to choose a concept that look better with building that I will design because my progression route is Architecture.
First theme was Purple Haze; to start, I did some research about the importance of purple colour in our society. The purple colour’s color column is Violet. Some people call it Violet. The purple colour is known as royalty, nobility, luxury, power and ambition. In some perspectives purple is representing wealth, creativity, wisdom, peace, mystery and magic.
In Western cultures (North America and Europe), purple is the color of royalty and also it is used for the cloaks and robes of kings and queens. As the this color related with royalty for centuries, Persian king Cyrus founder and king of the first Persian Empire wore purple tunic as his royal uniform. Also the Emperor punished their citizens if they wore any shade of the violet colour. The purple colour used during the Elizabeth era, Queen Elizabeth I set laws that permitted only her close relatives to wear purple. So Queen Elizabeth did nearly same thing with Emperor. Also Queen’s father George VI wore purple in his official portrait and the colour also showed prominently in her own coronation.
The first synthetic dyes were created in the 1850s and after that year it became easier and cheaper to make. Also purple colour was the first commercially successful synthetic colour. After purple colour becoming popular they started to symbolise whole host for instance, Cadbury Dairy Milk.
Actually Purple Haze word became popular after Jimi Hendrix's 1967 classic song. Jimi Hendrix claimed this was inspired by a dream where he was walking under the sea. In the dream, he said a purple haze surrounded him, engulfed him and got him lost. It was a traumatic experience, but in his dream his faith in Jesus saved him.
Also Purple Haze mean drug, its the name of drug. This drug contains small speaks of purple flower that helped to give it the Purple Haze name. At 60% sativa and 40% indica, Purple Haze is a sativa-dominant hybrid that is the love child of the Purple Thai and Haze strains.
The second theme was Earthly delights;
The painting depicts the “third day of creation,” a biblical milestone when Earthly paradise was forged by God. Painted in grisaille, it shows the world as a transparent orb filled with a monochromatic realm that accentuates the incandescently colorful world found within.The paintings of Dutch artist Hieronymous Bosch, who lived from approximately 1450 to 1516, largely remain a mystery because his imagery symbolizes the indiscernible world of dreams. Regarded by scholars as his most puzzling work, The Garden of Earthly Delights provides a visual representation which expresses the fears that dominated life in the Middle Ages-the insatiable weakness of man for not resisting sinful physical temptation, and eternal damnation in hell as just punishment of lustful human folly. In my opinion this painting one if the strangest works ever made because the year of made is very old.
This work has lots of perspective of sinful humanity when free of moral restraint. There are lots of nude people upon animals. Some of them is dancing in the waters of the pond. Few individuals do engage themselves within sexual orgies, there is no law in the Garden.
The last theme was Expressionism, Expressionism is a style of painting, music or drama in which the artist seeks to express the inner world of emotion rather than external reality.
Expressionism is a style of painting, music or drama in which the artist seeks to express the inner world of emotion rather than external reality. In expressionist art , colours can be highly intense and non-naturalistic. Also Expressionist art tends to be emotional and sometimes mystical.
Vincent van Gogh was also using expressionist art in his works.
Also there are lots of building designed by expressionism style, expressionist architects used materials such as brick, concrete and glass to create novel sculptural forms and massing, sometimes distorted and fragmented to express an emotional perspective. While I was doing research about Expressionism, I saw a lot of expressionism buildings and it was interesting to me.
For instance, well-known architect Frank Gehry using expressionism concept in his creations. To be honest I really like his style and I think I will choose expressionism for my project.
These are his buildings;
After researching the 3 themes, I think I am going use the Expressionism theme for my portfolio that I will do in the Art Portfolio lesson. I find Expressionism more suitable for my buildings. I hope this theme is going to suit my idea. I am really happy by choosing this theme for project because by using expressionist architecture forms I can easily express the inner sensitivities and feelings of the viewer or the architect. This theme also can improve my architectural skills that I will use for next year. This just a start, I will show all of my progress and all the researches.

Interesting post with lots of detail and you have clearly done some background research yourself here. Follow this up with some initial research, look at Architects from the expressionist era such as Hugo Haring, Hermann Finsterlin and Michel de Klerk.
