First Thoughts

  Term 3 just started, in the Art portfolio 2 we are gonna do major project, as my progression route is Architecture I will design a building. So last term in Art portfolio 1 we had a 3 concept themes for our pour major project so again in this term 3 we have 3 themes which are they Spiders From Mars , Renaissance and lastly Oceanic. So in this blog I am going to talk about the themes and which theme I will use for my major project and which has potential that would fit with my idea for my Major project for Art Portfolio 2.

First I would like to talk about Spiders From Mars theme;

Actually this themes name is coming from a well-known British rock band in the early's 1970 and the singer/ Songwriter/ Actor/ Artist of this band was David Bowie. This group has worked with him from 1970 to 1976.During this time period David Bowie created an alter ego which was playing a part of 'Ziggy Stardust' on stage between 1972 and 1973. He imagined the figure as a "alien rocks star" who visits an Earth in collapse.  Additionally, Bowie told the story of Star dust in the 1972 album titled "The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars."

Ziggy star dust is an androgynous alien and he is also a rock star. As it has been told by Bowie, ‘Ziggy Stardust came to earth which the earth was lacking in natural resources and he was ahead of a forthcoming apocalyptic disaster b to offer a message of hope. Ziggy is worshiped by a legion of fans, and he eventually dies as a victim of his own fame and excess. The character was created, as one might imagine, as a commentary on celebrity worship.Ziggy's look also different, Ziggy stardust’s hair is bright red mullet and Ziggy’s style was inspired by a model for Japanese designer Kansai Yamamoto, which Bowie had seen in a magazine. Furthermore Bowie dressed his Ziggy character in long , glamorous clothes with flares and an open chest. On the other hand, by 1972 Bowie was showcasing Yamamoto’s designs as stage wear for his character.

Lastly for the makeup of the character Bowie always uses pale skin which he called “snow-white tan”. He also shaved off his eyebrows, adding to the alien appearance. On his forehead, Bowie wore a gold “astral sphere” that had been suggested by make-up artist Pierre La Roche. Also Bowie was spending two hours for his makeup before his concerts.

The second theme called Renaissance;

Renaissance's  meaning ‘rebirth’, this is also a period in history that had a profound effect on Art and Society, on Fashion, Painting, Architecture, Sculpture, Commerce and Politics leading to the beginnings of the Modern world. Also it is stand for the culture and style of art and architecture developed during the Renaissance.

The spirit of the Renaissance found its most exact form in art. Art began to be regarded as a field of knowledge, useful in and of itself, and able to provide man images of God and his works as well as understandings of his place in the world.  Men like Leonardo da Vinci used it as a science, a way to learn about nature, and a way to keep track of findings. According to the then-developed mathematical concepts of balance, harmony, and perspective, art had to be founded on the observation of the external world.

 On the other hand Renaissance was also the architecture era, the style of arhcitactyure that emerged in 15th-century Florence,Italy. The ancient Greek and Roman classical architectural forms, it supplanted the Gothic aesthetics. Renaissance architecture refers to influential style of buildings in Italy as it mentioned and also it spread throughout Europe over the next two centuries. Renaissance architects didn’t just simply want to reproduce the past, they used classical elements to innovate new structures that rooted in history. They were focusing on the classical notions of beauty based on proportion and symmetry, like geometry and many building plans were symmetrical squares. All the building were including too much details.
Lastly Renaissance buildings focused on bringing in air and light to the space.

I would like to give one Renaissance building that located in Florence, Italy and called  Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore.

The architect of this building was Filippo Brunelleschi , he was the early Renaissance pioneer responsible for the famous red brick Duomo at the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore in Florence, Italy. Construction of the cathedral began in the Gothic period in 1296 and was completed in 1436. The majestic dome is not only the building’s crowning feature, but it is also a feat of engineering that was ahead of its time. And it influenced many religious buildings in Italy and around the world.

The last theme called Oceanic;

Oceanic basically mean something relating to ocean, so I going to talk about inspiration that came from oceanic and few examples.

First building that I find it has relation with oceanic is Inter Continental Shanghai Wonderland hotel, they designed the hotel into the cliff and with water.
Nowadays architects are beginning to construct buildings underwater. I want to talk about a building that is related to water first. I especially love the concept of this hotel, Inter Continental Shanghai Wonderland, where guests would have a naturalistic experience.

To talk about the colour oceanic,  as every person in earth know it blue represents both sky and the sea and it’s also associated with open spaces, freedom, and sensitivity. Some people saying that it also represents meaning of depth, trust, loyalty, and intelligence.On the other hand, according to Nasa, the reason the ocean is blue is due to the absorption and scattering of light. The blue wavelengths of light are scattered, like the scattering of blue light in the sky but absorption is a much larger factor than scattering for the clear ocean water.

So After researching about these 3 themes, I think I am going use the Renaissance theme for my major project for ArtPortfolio 2. To be honest I was stuck between Renaissance and Oceanic themes, Renaissance had a great impact on architecture and I could make beautiful buildings with this theme. So Oceanic theme is nearly similar with my last term's 'Expressionism' so I wanted to choose something not very close to with my last term's theme. Renaissance is way different than the Oceanic theme, I need to design my building in symmetric.  I wanted to try different techniques that I have never tried so that's I picked Renaissance for my theme. I am really happy by choosing this theme for project because by using expressionist architecture forms I can easily express the inner sensitivities and feelings of the viewer or the architect. This theme also can improve my architectural skills that I will use for next year. This just a start, I will show all of my progress and all the researches. Lastly I will post my 5 design sketches about this theme.

  1. Decent effort, Behzat, you have looked at the themes and given them some good consideration. Whilst the Renaissance theme could be seen as an easy choice for an architect as it had a major influence on architecture, I think focusing on specific elements as the basis of your design and then allowing your imagination to let your idea develop is the way to go. We discussed in the sessions in Week 2 about focusing on geometry and symmetry. Using these elements as the basis of a contemporary design would be a really interesting direction in which to go.

    Just a note - I can't read your references, the text is 'blanked out', so you are going to have to re-post them.
