Artist Research: David Chipperfield

In this blog I would like to talk about British architect, David Chipperfield  born on December 18, 1953, London, England and  who was especially known for quietly incorporating modern, minimal designs with historic buildings. The world recognized as one of the most eminent and successful figures in contemporary architecture. He also did the masterplan of of the well-known Royal Academy of Arts in London, 2018.

He graduated from the Architectural Association School of Architecture, London in 1977, after his graduation he began his first apprenticeship in the design studios of well-known architects Ricard Rogers and Norman Foster.    Chipperfield said that , “architecture has a moral duty towards the surrounding in which it created”. His philosophy focuses on designing architecture appropriate for its surroundings and the origins of the place. He had lot of exhibitions; his recent exhibition was in Basilica Palladiana as mentioned on my previous blog.

The first building that I will talk about is Morland Mixité Capitale that located in France, Paris. David Chipperfield designed the  Morland Mixité Capitale in 2015 however the construction ends in 2022.

The idea of renovation was, the name will going to change to Morland Mixité Capitale. Also tthey will change the modelling and extension of the building. The reason of wanting complex for the building to open place with character of campus and positive effect on the neighbourhood.

So two structures have been added to building, the new volumes are got higher above the ground to create a new public area so people will have a passage to view the River Seine. The renovation also keeps a large percentage of the original building to ensure the sustainability. Also, the new building volumes, the existing buildings are structured base on a skeleton of concrete with supports and facades are coloured cream on natural limestone. In addition, low energy and resource consumption are used in this building.

Here is the Floor Plan of the project;

The reason I did research about this building, as I am going to design a contemporary mosque with the idea of Renaissance theme, this building is completely contemporary architecture and it includes modern arch styles that I can use for my modern mosque.

The second of building that I am going to talk about is James Simon Gallery in Berlin. James Simon Gallery is a visitor centre for the  Museum Island in Berlin, Germany.

In 2019 this Gallery designed by David Chipperfield and it provides an entrance building for Museum Island. According to Chipper  “This highly symbolic location encouraged us to find a reading of the building that transcends its practical functions”.David Chipperfield here in this gallery tried to change the classic style of museums, he said that “Museums were once closed-off boxes isolated from the world, but today’s museums must be dynamic social spaces”.

The interior is extremely bright because the sunlight passes through from the floor-to-ceiling windows to the floor, and this provides a better viewing for visitors. Additionally, the Museum Island's theme is well-established by adopting the new architectural design with its columns, wide staircases, and constructed landscape. Although David Chipperfield generates the gallery’s columns from Nazi rallying ground  by Albert Speer. Lastly the material that they used for this building is reconstructed stone with natural stone and mixed with the Museum Island’s polychrome material palette of limestone, sandstone and rendered facades.

I really the idea of this building because Chipperfield instead of creating singular building, he an architecture of promenade and connection, a building that serves the main museum structures, that defines edges and that creates new external spaces as much as it creates fine internal spaces.

Finally, I would like to mention that understanding more about this well-known British architect will help me develop the design idea for the mosque I will be creating for my art portfolio. I have discussed his works, his opinions to his works, and finally the architectural style that he used.  I chose these two structures for my research because they contain a few of the same architectural characteristics with my  mosque design, which will bring together features of Renaissance and modern architecture.So the common features with Mosques they feature arches and columns in their architectural designs.Lastly I will post about my final design and a few additional artist researches in my upcoming blog posts.

  1. Interesting post, Behzat and good that you are thinking carefully about how you might link this to your development. In AP2 this week we will be working on further development of your 2D work, so use the sessions to follow up on this post with evidence of how Chipperfield's work is helping and inspiring your work.
