I would would like to describe how I came up with my final theatre design for my main project with examples of the design process. For my final art portfolio project, I will be creating a theatre in Nicosia, the capital of Cyprus, as I previously mentioned. For my theatre design, I'm going to use an expressionism theme. Additionally, I looked at the style of expressionism I have researched expressionist dance costumes because they were worn by people in theatre as I am going create theatre.
Minya Diez-Dührkoop, Dance costumes for “Toboggan” (1924)
During the early 1920s in Germany, Lavinia Schulz and Walter Holdt were doing expressionist dance performances. Lavinia Schulz and Walter Holdt were a wife and husband partnership they were so famous during 1920’s. Their costumes were consisting of “ creeping, stamping, squatting, crouching, kneeling, arching, striding, lunging, leaping in mostly diagonal-spiraling patterns” across the stage.
Schulz believed “art should be an expression of struggle” and they are using dance to express “the violent struggle of a female body to achieve central, dominant control of the performance space and its emptiness.”
While researching about these expressionist dance costumes, I have realised I can use these costumes as an inspiration for my theatre design.
So I begin to look over their cloth details to see if there is a shape I might utilise for my theatre design.
These are the costumes;
I was very interested in the 1st costume, the shapes of expressionist dances clothes has a potential to suit to my theatre design, as it seems

So I tried these shapes on an A4 sheet. Here is the process of how I found my final design for theatre;
Here I tried to draw a similar shape of hand and foot on the costume.
Then I tried to add some different shapes and angles of lines.
After that I drew from different view angles to understand the sketch better.
Also I have added some shadows and lines to give the shape of the building better.
Lastly, this my final design sketch for my major project.

Finally, I painted my theatre design with coloured inks. I'll change the window frames by reducing the frames to make it nicer. I included Frank Gehry's architectural style into my final sketch, and I think that his well-known Disney Concert Hall provided inspiration to me. Last but not least, my next target is to design my theatre in 3D using the programme Sketch-up. For the floor plan, I'll use AutoCAD, and I'll definitely submit them to my blogger.
