Interior Structure Research For Ledra Theatre

After finishing my floor-plan, I am ready to research about the interior design of theatre. In this blog I will be talk about the stage room design which will include the seats, lighting, acoustic, soundproofing and lastly decoration. As my theatre will include expressionism architecture, that means the interior needs to have extraordinary shapes and design. So I have looked few well-known theatres to get the idea.

For the interior decoration I have looked to 3 well-known theatres, these three theatres are also include expressionism exterior design as well as the interior design is also expressionism theme.

First interior I would like to talk about is Frank Gehry's Walt Disney Concert Hall. I used this building for my design research and I will definitely use his design idea for my Ledra Theatre.

The concert hall was designed as a single volume, with orchestra and audience occupying the same space. Seats are located on each side of the stage, providing some audience members with distant views of the performers’ sheet music. The balconies implied like social hierarchies within the audience, and spatial segregation was minimized in the design, which I really liked this minimised idea.

The Second Theatre's interior that I will talk about is Sydney Opera House;

The architect of this opera house is Jørn Utzon, this architect used expressionism design for his exterior design of opera house. I have chose this specific building for this research because the theatre and opera house are nearly same the only difference is just the location of the Stage, rather then every system and interior are same. So Sydney Opera House is located in Sydney as we can easily see from its name. The interior of this theatre really interesting, the design is different than Franks Gehry's Concert Hall. He used wood for the design structure.

The last Theatre that I have looked for interior design is Zaha Hadid's Grand Théatre de Rabat. I think this interior is one of the best interior design from all of the theatre design that I have looked. The design evolved from the concepts of a natural landscape and the fascinating interplay between architecture and nature; engaging with the principles of erosion, geology and topography. She used expressionism for her interior design.The shape of seats are like pebbles in a stream smoothed by erosion, the Guangzhou Opera House sits in perfect harmony with its riverside location.

For my Ledra Theatre interior I will look lighting;

There are many types of lights which can be used in a variety of ways. As well as this there are coloured LEDs which can be place in front of the lights to cast a coloured light onto the stage. So I will use Spot light , this light is used to highlight a character or element on stage and can be accompanied by coloured filters. The light is used to draw focus to the character or element it is highlighting and can be used to separate a character from the back drop and characters around them often for an important piece of dialog or to emphasise the action, emotion, or expression of the character.

Also I will use Flood light so what is flood lights, flood lights give off wide angled, clear light but have a drawback of little control over the spread of the light. Flood lights are relatively basic pieces of equipment by comparison to other lights used in theatre. They can be used with coloured gels but gels used with these lights are likely to perish more quickly than those used with other lights due to the high temperatures emitted by flood lights.

Lastly I can use Fresnel light source. This light can occur  a softer edge than a spotlight. Its nearly same with spotlight but ways to its more striking, sharp-edged spot light counterpart with the exception that they are typically used for backlighting or top lighting. It uses a diffusing lens in front of the lamp and when used alongside other Fresnel lights it can offer good overall lighting. This lamp can also be used with coloured filters.

It's very important to know the seating design if a person going to design a theatre. So now I am going to talk about seating styles and designs;

I will use dress circle or the royal circle for my theatre seating. The dress circle and royal circle is same but few theatre are mentioning different  If it's in a theatre with two levels, the dress circle will be the top level. Dress circle seating is a great option if you want to see every moment of a show from a higher level, rather than being on the same eyeline as the stage. This way, you can still be immersed by the action without worrying about missing anything that happens.  So my seat will be with 3 levels so that people can easily the show and my theatre will have 720 seats, as the population is not high in Nicosia.

Lastly I will talk the Sound Proofing and Acoustic;

Sound system design encompasses both sound design and all the components that bring sound to life, speakers, input devices like microphones, digital or analog mixers and more. A speaker system’s positioning and tuning greatly affects how the sound will be conveyed to the audience. These two elements play a crucial role in defining the directionality, which dictates where the sound comes from and how intelligible it is. These considerations are key when designing a sound system setup. If we are going to use good sound system the theatre needs sound proofing so the sound proofing reduces the amount of sound that gets into or out of a room, it doesn’t affect how sound travels around the space and therefore isn’t enough on its own to create pure sound.

This research I would help to understand the structures of interior in theatre. I need learn every structure before design the building. I will also use perfect seat quality for the customers and I will prove WIFI to viewers so that they use they phones to text some in theatre area. My next task is post my 3D design from blogger with its process.
